A “Farbenrausch”: Premiere of Raphaela Wagner’s Opera Debut with “Un ballo in maschera”

Raphaela Wagner’s staging of Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera at the 2026 Werdenberger Schloss-Festspiele has been warmly received by the press. For her opera-directing debut, Wagner relocates Verdi’s drama to historic Werdenberg in the late seventeenth century, transforming Riccardo into the local Landvogt and weaving the region’s history and landscape directly into the storytelling. Critics have particularly praised the way this local reinterpretation remains faithful to the spirit of Verdi while giving the opera a distinctive sense of place. The Appenzeller Zeitung described the production as a “Farbenrausch” (a riot of colour) highlighting Wagner’s staging as reminiscent of a Brueghel painting and the striking interplay between stage, lake, castle and surrounding mountains. Jan Krobot, writing in Online Merker, describes the combination of fidelity to Verdi and local reinterpretation as surprisingly successful, ultimately calling the production “rundum überzeugend” (thoroughly convincing). The production’s visual language and use of the natural environment create a world in which the landscape becomes more than a backdrop: it becomes part of the drama itself. Together with a strong ensemble, chorus and orchestra, Wagner’s direction has created an Un ballo in maschera that feels both rooted in Werdenberg’s history and vividly alive in the present. The ecstatic response to the premiere and subsequent sold out performances culminated in prolonged standing ovations.
